VASE WANTED / 02

PHYSICAL VASES

Soon I realized that I need to spend the “luxurious” time, to develop a ritual to make the “luxurious” vase, occupies my physical space.

There is a very specific group of people who are also drifting around as I am. I want to combine their stories with mine, in order to present our stories, and make the series of Vase Wanted to engage with wider audiences. When I ask them about their senses of belongingness and home, and what brings them comfort, the results are surprisingly parallel. A few of the interviewees mentioned when they start to decorate the space as how they like, they start to live at “home,” which emphasizes the meaning of making the vases in real life.

02-1 knitting / marks

This is the first experiment to establish a hands-on ritual of making, inspired by Cherry Wan’s story. As knitting and crocheting are her own way of spending quality time with herself, I incorporated the knitting process and the needles into the vase itself, to create material contrasts. The artificial marks and human touches left on the vase are also parts of the intentions, as she finds stains and marks are proof of her existence in the space. The whole process of making can be found HERE.

02-2 food

Food was one of the most relatable results that I received, Vase 2 is dedicated to it. It was made in the identical size and color theme to the rice bowl that I used back home, and functions both as a bowl for rice, or a vase. The usage of vase 2 is demonstrated in a short film. The film was curated to provide a background story explaining the significance of a vase to me, and of food to Yujie. When audiences have no access to their sense of smell in this story, the film uses visuals and sounds to draw them in. It does not only engage audiences’ relativeness, but also shows the similarity of the motions between cooking and making the vase.

02-3 items

Vase 3 is made of a duvet.

Out of all the nonessential or “luxurious” items that my interviewees mentioned, like a tub, a projector, a thick quality duvet, a plant, etc., that are nice to have, a duvet would bring out comfort and safety.
